TIme to Wake Up!

I don't know about you, but I'm more excited about what God is doing with us at church at the moment, than ever before! We seem to be going through a period of tremendous blessing, transformation, adventure and encounter at present - all of which is really exciting. However, as we enjoy this season of God's favour, I'm also finding that this is a time of real challenge too.

I know how easy I find myself 'getting comfortable' at church.  I know how I can settle into predictability and routine - sitting in the same place, talking to the same people and so on. These things in themselves are not really a big deal, but the problem is that, if I'm not careful, I can also allow my expectations of God to become predictable as well - my faith can be limited by my limiting expectations. You see, it makes things nice and easy, keeps them nice and comfortable -  in fact, causes a mindset that leads to apathy and unbelief!

I have felt God challenge me about this recently through a song. It is one I have listened to a lot, and  two particular lines have stood out for me: 'Awake my soul, awake my soul and sing! and 'I hear Your voice and this is my awakening.'  As I was singing this last week, I felt God ask 'Well...?' (He didn't need to say anything else - that was enough!).

The song is really about us crying out to God to bring revival, filling His people with His Spirit. Well, I guess I have been reminded that 'revival starts with us' and for me, it is time to 'wake up!' What does the song stir in you?

Sitting at Jesus’ Feet

Thoughts from... Claire Burford

After listening to Aled preach recently about the Mary and Martha story, I have been pondering why it always seems so difficult to spend time sitting at Jesus’ feet and what that really means?
I have recently read an article from a book called ‘The Lord’s table’ which I found really helpful.

Sitting at Jesus’ feet indicates:
 Humility;
 Submission;
 an attitude of learning;
 faith in what Jesus had to say;
 Mary’s love for Jesus (she was hanging on his every word);
That Mary was holding to His teaching (she was sitting still, intent on hearing, believing and obeying).

So let’s try starting our times with the Lord by sitting at His feet.
Turn off the worship CD, say nothing, be intent on hearing from Him and hang on to His every word. We may be surprised at what we hear!

Tuesday 17 July 2012

Hey Guys,

Just read this interesting little set of songwriting tips from Brian Doerksen (who wrote Come, Now Is the Time to  Worshihp, amongst others). Some interesting ideas from him - worth having a browse over...

Find fresh ways of singing Psalms
I don’t think the content of the Psalms will ever go out of style or become irrelevant. Granted, Psalm 144 is one of the tougher ones to set to music— but it’s still needed.

Don’t be afraid of the “out of key” chords
In the song ‘Fortress 144’, I use both the flat 6 major 7 and the flat 7 major (Cmaj7 is the flat 6 and D is the flat 7). If you have no idea what I just said, and your heart is being stirred to write music, taking a basic music theory course would be really helpful and actually lots of fun. Understanding the basics of how music works helps unlock all the potential building blocks of music so you can write songs that move other people.

Take a lyrical risk lyrically
Include things that are unexpected but true. I watched a few people raise their eyebrows the first time they heard the phrase “father of lies.” But that is the battle we are in: a battle over our thoughts and coming into agreement with God.

Focus your song around a key word
What is that word that jumps out at you, the one you sense you need to focus on? Build your song around that word!

Bring a little dissonance into your melody and chordal structure
That tension and dissonance reflect life all around us. If everything is too predictable, the song may be dismissed as too sweet. Find ways to let these kinds of tensions tell a bigger story with your songs.

Don’t let a song go by without bringing God and His character into focus
This song is primarily about declaring our choice to follow God. However, the bridge gives me a chance to lift up the character of the One we are following: Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father, etc.

Pick one of the lament psalms, and set it to a new melody
Even if you don’t write it for the public to hear, it will do your soul good to enter the world of the psalmist and make it your own!

Write your own lament
Express some of your grief and loss. If you have nothing to lament, maybe you are not risking enough for love.

Don’t just declare your confident strengths — confess your humanity, your weaknesses, your fragility, and your questions.
For some reason worship songwriting launches into this unending stream of confident declarations — but this confidence puts distance between the song and the lives of most people. Our songs should express who we really are, not who we think we ought to be. One is worship in truth; the other is flattery and religion. Of course there are times when we need to simply sing a song about the greatness of God. But worship needs to be a good balance of all of the human experience. That’s why the Psalms worked so well; you find it all there!

Post your comments and let's hear what you think of these ideas...

New Version of Here Is Love

Hey Guys,

We are going to be using a different version of Here Is Love on Sunday. It will be based upon the version done by Jesus Culture and it's fantastic. The version is a more rocky, dynamic interpretation of the song. Please have a listen to it - listen carefully to the intro/turn around and also the coda that they sing 'Your love is higher, Your love is wider, etc.' The melody is the same as usual, and this is based on the original hymn, so it's in 3/4 time.

We'll work on it on Sat evening.

Love,

Simon

New Song - New Day

Hey Guys,

Here is a fantastic new song that we are going to introduce to the church this coming Sunday. It is a great song, full of energy and drive. It's called 'New Day' and is very much a celebration of how Jesus has changed our lives - perfect for the early, more praise and thanksgiving part of our meeting.
Please have a good listen to it and come prepared to rock on Saturday at band practice - let's see what we can do with this song!

I'll get the chord chart e-mailed to you before Tuesday this week.

Trust Me...and JUMP!

Hey everyone,

A couple of weeks ago, our daughters booked up for my wife, Kate and I to spend a day at 'Go Ape' - a sort of high-ropes assault course, 40ft up in the trees of a nearby forest! It was a brilliant day and we got that real rush you get when you do something scary, but exciting at the same time!

At a recent worship hub meeting, I really felt that God used this 'Go Ape' adventure to speak to us as a worship team, and He started off by asking a question:

'How much do you trust Me?'

God wanted us as a worship team to ponder on this for a moment...whether it is as a team serving the local chuch, in our own individual circumstances, or in family life - how much are we trusting God in the challenges that come our way?

For the 'Go Ape' course, Kate and I were kitted out in a safety harness and a series of safety clips that meant we were always connected to the wires up in the trees. We had to climb up to small platforms about 40ft up in different large trees, then step off the platform out onto the zip wire; the scramble net; the balance steps or whatever the obstacle was in front of us. Our harness and system of clips and pulleys allowed us to move freely over the obstacle and go on towards the next challenge. The only way we could do this was to fully trust our training that we had been given and trust that the safety harness was going to take our weight. Of course, the whole set up was rigorously checked every day and was utterly safe - the real issue was actually about us having the courage to trust in it all!

I really felt God remind us as individuals and as a worship team that He is our safety harness and we will always be connected to Him. We have and would continue to face all sorts of challenges in our own lives and together as musicians - we could not simply remain on the platforms, but had to step off and trust Him in order to move forwards.

As we prayed into this, one of the group read from Psalm 145: 13 - 16. This wonderful scripture totally confirmed what God wanted to say:

'The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.14 The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. 16 You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.'

Now that's what I call a pretty good safety harness!

I really want to encourage and challenge everyone...remember that whatever circumstances you find yourself in, God has always got hold of you and will lead you safely through it. That doesn't mean it won't sometimes be scary, but it will always be exciting! Why don't you 'step off the platform' in faith and take some risks for Him! It's time for another adventure with God!

For His glory,

Simon
